Hormonal Shifts, Identity, and Neurodiversity: How Reiki Has Supported Me

For a long time, I experienced my body and mind as something to manage rather than something to listen to. Hormonal shifts, understanding my identity, and living with my neurodivergent brain, often felt like separate challenges — until I realised how deeply connected they are.

Through my own lived experience, and through my work as a Reiki practitioner, I’ve come to see these transitions not as problems to solve, but as invitations to relate to myself with more compassion.

This is not a clinical explanation, and it’s not a promise of healing. It’s simply a sharing of what has supported me.

When Hormones Amplify Everything

For me, hormonal shifts have a way of turning the volume up on everything — sensory input, emotions, fatigue, intuition, overwhelm. For me, changes in hormones didn’t just affect my body; they reshaped how I experienced the world.

As a neurodivergent person, this amplification could be intense. Sensitivities increased. Emotional regulation became harder. My sense of identity — how I understood myself, my needs, and my limits — felt less stable.

What I needed most during these times wasn’t advice or solutions. I needed safety. I needed rest. I needed permission to slow down.

Identity in Transition

My hormonal shifts often coincided with shifts in identity. Roles I once held comfortably no longer fit. The ways I masked, coped, or pushed through became unsustainable.

This was unsettling, and at times deeply grief-filled. But it was also honest.

I began to understand identity not as something I had to define clearly, but as something that could be fluid, responsive, and alive. Neurodiversity taught me that my way of processing the world was not wrong — just different. Hormonal change asked me to adapt again, with more care.

How Reiki Supported Me

Reiki is part of my life not as a cure, but as a steady presence during times when my system feels overloaded.

From my lived experience, Reiki supported me in these ways:

It helps regulate my nervous system - When my body was in constant alert, Reiki offered moments of deep calm. Not by forcing relaxation, but by allowing my system to settle in its own time.

It gave me a non-verbal form of support - As a neurodivergent person, talking isn’t always the easiest or safest way to process. Reiki didn’t require explanations, eye contact, or articulation. It met me where I was.

It helped me reconnect with my body - Hormonal shifts had made my body feel unpredictable and, at times, untrustworthy. Reiki gently supported a relationship of listening rather than control.

It created space for identity to soften and shift - Reiki didn’t ask me to know who I was. It allowed me to exist without labels, (I also have a positive experience with labels in an empowering way) even briefly — and that was profoundly supportive.

A Spiritual Perspective (Without Bypassing)

Spiritually, I’ve come to understand these experiences as periods of re-calibration. Not awakening in a dramatic sense, but deep listening.

Reiki, for me, is not about rising above the body or emotions. It’s about being present with them. It honours the wisdom of a body that is neurodivergent, hormonally shifting, and continually adapting.

There is nothing to transcend here. Only something to tend.

What I’ve Learned to Offer Others

Because of my lived experience, my Reiki practice is shaped by a deep respect for:

  • Neurodivergent ways of sensing and processing

  • Hormonal variability and unpredictability

  • Identity as fluid, layered, and personal

  • The need for consent, safety, and choice

Reiki, as I offer it, is inclusive, affirming, and adaptable. There is no expectation to relax, open up, or feel a certain way. If you need to stim, move, rest, or be quiet. You do you.

A Closing Reflection

If you are navigating hormonal shifts alongside questions of identity, especially as a neurodivergent person, I want you to know this: you are not too much, and you are not broken.

Your system is responding intelligently to change.

Reiki has supported me by offering a gentle place to land — a reminder that even in transition, I am whole.

If Reiki becomes part of your journey, I hope it offers you the same sense of permission: to slow down, to listen, and to be exactly who you are in this moment.

With love and blessings
